Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to the northern Great Plains.

Habitat: Sagebrush desert to ponderosa pine forest openings.

Flowers: July-September

Description:
General:

Low, bushy shrubs to 1 m. tall, with brown bark and brittle, glabrous twigs.

Leaves:

Leaves 1-6 cm. long and 0.5-10 mm. wide, alternate, green, twisted and sticky.

Flowers:

Heads in compact, rounded clusters; flowers rayless, yellow, usually 5 in a head, the corollas 5-7 mm. long; involucre 5-8 mm. high, the bracts inbricated, about 15; pappus of numerous capillary bristles.
